Early In the morning on May 28, 1668, Pedro Rivera
had awakened and listened again for the sounds he
had heard.
It was still about four hours before the first light, but he didn’t want to wake his wife Maria or their son Diego.
He began to think he had imagined it when he again heard, in the distance, several musket shots and someone yelling. The sounds that he had heard were from the beginning of a Pirate raid on St. Augustine.
After awakening his wife and son, he had them follow many other women and children out of town
to hide in the nearby woods.
He remained behind and, along with several neighbors, tried to defend their homes. They were not successful, and several of them, including Pedro, were shot and killed. Upon their return, Maria and the eight-year-old Diego learned of the tragedy and had to start their lives over again.
Sixteen years later, in 1684, the now twenty-two-year-old Diego was living with his mother and his new young wife, Luisa. They followed the road of life in the small town, with him becoming a Fisherman, yet he was always involved with the local Friar at the church where Luisa and he had both grown up.
It was a struggle, and they were only a small family, so when he found he could also work on the construction of the Castillo De San Marcos, which was currently being built, and still could fish for a living, the small family began to do better.
Life in the town included much of their time together in both church and at home. But upon the death of his mother, he and Luisa found they needed to determine their lives together, and now, with the new birth of their daughter. Their work and lives became even a little harder.
